It’s that time of the year again. The phrase “New year, new me” is being banded about everywhere, from notebooks to adverts trying to sell gym memberships and yoga mats. Fair enough, January is as good a time as any to start doing that thing you’ve been meaning to start doing for ages but just haven’t got round to doing. But January does not mean it’s time to ‘get fit’, ‘lose those few extra pounds’ and reinvent yourself completely.
I’m not saying that change is bad. In fact, in lots of cases, change is good and is actually what’s needed. But, these kinds of changes don’t involve trying to upgrade ourselves to the latest version. They just involve taking small steps towards wherever it is we’re trying to go. I, for one, am rubbish at being okay with just being me. Sometimes I don’t even know who ‘me’ is. But I’m getting there, and I think that’s all that matters.
So, this New Year, I won’t be writing any motivational ‘January Goals’/ ‘Monday Motivation’/ ‘New Year, New Me’ posts. I’ll just be over here, doodling in my un-insta-worthy bullet journal and just about getting by. Plod on, I say, plod on.
Having said all that, last January I started using the 1 Second Every Day app, so it’s nearly time to create a video of the whole year. 2018 has been a year of ups and downs (mainly downs), so it’s going to be an interesting watch. I’m in two minds as to whether to carry on for another year. Taking the videos is just part of my routine now, so I might feel a bit bereft if I stop, but I’m sure my family will be relieved about no longer having to pose for endless clips. Whether or not I do decide to carry on, I’ve started a page in my journal titled ‘One word every day’, so I’m going to try that for a bit and see if it does something for me. If not, oh well, at least I got a pretty #bujospread out of it.
